Already during his engagement as oboist and conductor in the Czechoslovak Radio in the 1930s Smetáček made a number of recordings on shellac discs for Ultraphon, Esta, His Master´s Voice, Telefunken, Odeon, Polydor, Homocord, Parlaphone and Supraphon labels, mainly of chamber and orchestral works of a popular character.
In the post-war years it was almost solely the Czech Philharmonic that recorded the major works of Czech and world classical music for the Czech label Supraphon, the exclusive recording company during that period.
As Smetáček´s local conducting activities were above all connected with his home orchestra FOK, his share in these recordings was as a result relatively limited. However, his discography includes a wide range of styles from mainstream popular to more serious works, the most important of which is the first Czechoslovak digital recording of Má vlast (My Country) by Smetana with the Czech Philharmonic.
There are also many recordings of instrumental concerts on which he is an accompanist to both local and foreign soloists.
For purpose of these web pages Supraphon a.s. has kindly provided us the material to create a database in which the visitor can look up any of Smetáček’s Supraphon recordings using similar criteria as in the databases for OBOIST and CONDUCTOR.
