During his career as an oboe player and conductor Smetáček made a large number of radio recordings in the Czechoslovak Radio studios, which are deposited in the archives and phonoteques of the different Czech and Slovak radio stations. The archives contain 1,635 records. That, of course, does not equate to the number of recorded works, as each part of a composition is listed under a separate number. Nevertheless, the sheer number of records is remarkable.
The list of radio recordings is available for research purposes in the Czech National Archives together with other documents from Smetáček’s estate.
In addition to the Czechoslovak Radio Smetáček often made radio recordings during his stays abroad both in Europe and overseas, most often, perhaps, for the Norddeutsher Rundfunk in Hamburg. This includes both public and studio recordings and they are still quite often broadcasted by the radio stations focused on classical music. Some of them can be found in the databases OBOIST and CONDUCTOR.
